Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials is a part of Rzeszow University of Technology. The facility leads interdisciplinary researches and trainings in field of material science, especially nickel cobalt, titanium and aluminium based superalloys, protective coatings and single crystals manufacturing methods.
Laboratory representatives on Modern Steels & Iron Alloys MS&IA 2016 Conference
On 5-8 of July 2016 Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials employees: Paweł Rokicki and Kamil Dychtoń participated in scientific conference „Modern Steels and Iron Alloys - MS&IA2016: Design - Technologies - Properties – Applications”. The conference is organised every two years as a part of NanoStal R&D project aiming in development of new and advanced heat treatment technology for nanobainitic steels. As the part of the conference, three scientific articles were reported and presented focusing new activities in the laboratory in the field of heat treatment and thermo-chemical treatment of tool steels.
AMT 2016 Conference in Rawa Mazowiecka
On 5-8 June 2016 Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials representatives: Jan Sieniawski, Maciej Motyka, Waldemar Ziaja, Paweł Rokicki and Andrzej Nowotnik, participated in "Advanced Materials and Technologies AMT 2016" Conference organised by Military University of Technology in Rawa Mazowiecka Hotel Ossa Congress&SPA. The conference program included many interesting presentations of results coming from research facilities all over the Europe.
Kick-Off meeting of the consortium of scientific project titled: New methods of advanced thermal barrier and environmental barrier coating deposition and characterization - ATEC
On 10-11 may 2016 Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials was a hosting place for kick-off meeting organised in the scope of European project in the CORNET Initiative New methods of advanced thermal barrier and environmental barrier coating deposition and characterization - ATEC. The meeting included details of cooperation with German partners and development of research schedule for the next half year.
Visit in SWEREA institute in Sweden
On 7th and 8th of September 2015, Paweł Rokicki and Andrzej Nowotnik represented the Laboratory through the RAMLIGHT project meeting that took place in SWEREA institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The meeting was organised to discuss the roles of individual partners in the project and estimate the budget draft. The RAMLIGHT project aims in development of new Additive Manufacturing methods for manufacturing of critical elements of aircraft engine.
The participatns from 9 european countries visited the Laboratory
Aviation Valley in cooperation with the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials, which is a part of Rzeszow University of Technology, organised a factory tour to their facilities to give networking opportunities for the participants.
The participants from 9 european countries had an opportunity to visit the facility which leads interdisciplinary researches and trainings in field of material science, especially nickel cobalt, titanium and aluminium based superalloys, protective coatings and single crystals manufacturing methods as well as establish contacts with the further perspective of setting up technical collaborations and future R&D projects in the frame of H2020.
Participants representing aerospace sector connects leading aerospace clusters, companies, associations and support organisations Western Europe (France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy) with quickly evolving aerospace clusters and strongholds in Eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Baltic States).
Unit Director of National Institute for Materials Science visited the Laboratory
On the 25th and 26th of September, Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials had a pleasure of hosting Unit Director of National Institute for Materials Science Professor Seiji Kuroda. Through the visit, Professor Kuroda presented NIMS and the possible cooperation has been discussed.
INNOTECH project seminar
The seminar, that took place on 14th of February 2014, was one of a series of meetings organized in the framework of the project titled :” Polycrystalline cored thin-walled LPT casting blade family manufacturing” realized in the INNOTECH initiative. The meeting was attended, among others, by the project contractors of Silesian University of Technology Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy: Jan Cwajna, Franciszek Bińczyk. Stanislaw Roskosz, Warsaw University of Technology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering: Hubert Matysiak, WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" Company: Rafał Cygan, Tadeusz Gancarczyk, Stanislaw Bąk, Marcin Kędra, Grzegorz Łabaj, Radosław Tarabuła, Dorota Wyrobek and the Department of Materials Science Rzeszow University of Technology: Krzysztof Kubiak, and Jan Sieniawski. Contractors of the research tasks presented the status of their work. The problems of implementation and agreed plans for the next three months have been discussed.
"Turbine drive advanced manufacturing techniques" project seminar
The research members consortium meeting that was held on 4th of February 2014 is the beginning of the project titled "Turbine drive advanced manufacturing techniques" under the INNOLOT initiative. In the project, research and development work on innovative solutions for the aviation industry will be executed. The project is a result of an agreement between the National Centre for Research and Development and a group of aviation companies associated in the Polish Aviation Technology Platform. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Consortium Leader : WSK PZL Rzeszów SA and contractors in the project: the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Warsaw Institute of Aviation, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research Polish Academy of Sciences, Cracow University of Technology, Opole University of Technology, Lublin University of Technology, ULTRATECH and WALDREX companies and the Department of Materials Science and Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials of Rzeszów University of Technology. The principles of conducting research task scheduling and reporting have been discussed.
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria visited the Laboratory
On the 28th of March, Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials had a pleasure of hosting Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mr Samuel Wodi Jimba with his wife, Minister Counselor Akinbo Theophilus and Attache Arabi I. Alhassane. The meeting was also attended by Mrs Anna Smith, Deputy of Podkarpackie Region.
Through the visit, guests got familiar with the organization and activities of the Laboratory. In the meeting the possibility of cooperation, especially in the field of student internships has been discussed.
The visit was part of the two-day stay in Podkarpackie and was aimed to read the specifics of the region and to identify the sectors in which Polish-Nigerian cooperation would be possible.
INNOTECH initiative project meeting
On the 27th of February 2013 a meeting of project "Range of precision manufacturing technology, polycrystalline, thin-cored castings, rotor blades of large-scale low-pressure turbine aircraft engine new generation of GP 7200" within INNOTECH initiative has been organised. The meeting was attended by the employees of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy Silesian University of Technology, Jan Cwajna, Franciszek Binczyk, Janusz Adamski, Stanislaw Roskosz, employees of the Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Materials Science: Hubert Matysiak, Alicja Bałkowiec, WSK "PZL-Rzeszów": Rafał Cygan, Stanisław Bąk, Marcin Kędra, Grzegorz Labaj, and Rzeszow University of Technology Department of Materials Science: Krzysztof Kubiak and Jan Sieniawski Task research contractors presented the status of their implementation. The issues concerning implementation of agreed plans within next 3 months have been discussed.
CORNET initiative apllication organisation meeting
On 25th of February this year the Laboratory was visited by Professors: Stanislaw Mitura and Jerzy Ratajski with co-workers, representing Institute of Technology and Education of Technical University of Koszalin. The meeting concerned the determination of the terms of reference for the research project proposal within CORNET Initiative.
Report meeting concerning APPLIED RESEARCH PROGRAMM
On the 14th of February this year has been organised a meeting of the representatives of Faculty of Chemistry of Silesian University of Technology, Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science Department of Rzeszow University of Technology and the WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" concerning implementation of the project within APPLIED RESEARCH PROGRAMM titled: Technology of layers of corrosion resistant magnesium alloys using fluorescent oxidation". During the meeting current issues concerning the implementation of the project has been discussed.
Visit of Czestochowa University of Technology emloyees
On the February 12th, 2013 stayed with a working visit in the WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" and the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials Professors Leopold Jeziorski, Janina Adamus, Michael Szot and Dr. Marcin Nabialek from Czestochowa University of Technology. The Laboratory was represented by Maciej Motyka and Adam Batsch. The details of the project titled "Development and implementation of plastic forming technology with resistive heating elements of aircraft engines from hard to machine nickel and iron based superalloys" conducted in the INNOTECH initiative have been discussed.
The Nacional Center for Research and Development and FEMS directors visit in the Laboratory
The Department of Material Science and Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials on 31st of January and 1st of February hosted professor Krzysztof Kurzydłowski - head director of the National Center for Research and Development, professor Ehrendried Zschech - the president of the Federation of European Materials Society (FEMS) and of the Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-destructive Testing in Dresden It was a working visit concerning expanding of the cooperation in the field of high-tech materials and technologies.
Professor Ehrendried Zschech deals with nanomaterials and nanoanalysis with particular emphasis to technology, thin films and nanotechnology. The papers concerning the organisation and scope of the research projects carried out in the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials and the Department of Material Science have been presented Discussion concerned possible cooperation with other Universities and affiliated companies in the group of Avaiation Valley. Professor Ehrendried Zschech was also a guest of the Faculty of Chemistry of our University. He delivered there a lecture: "Mechanical properties of thin films materials".
Visit of professor Włodzimierz Bogdanowicz
On the 31st of January 2013 the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials hosted for a working visit professor Włodzimierz Bogdanowicz and his co-workers from Silesian University of Technology. During the meeting the state of preparations for the commencement of research tasks in INNOTECH project and technical conditions of contract have been discussed - the modernization of equipment to assess the excellence of the structure of large-sized single crystals by X-ray diffraction.
Visit of the heads of the Material Science and Alloys and Composite Materials Technology departmens of Silesian University of Technology professors
January 23rd, 2013 - Professors: Grzegorz Niewielski ( head of the Material Science Department), Marek Cieśla (head of the Department Of Alloys And Composite Materials Technology) and Kazimierz Ducki of Silesian University of Technology stayed on a working visit in the WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" S.A. and the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials. Grzegorz Niewielski (kierownik Katedry Nauki o Materiałach), Marek Cieśla (kierownik Katedry Technologii Materiałów) i Kazimierz Ducki of Silesian University of Technology. The state of research tasks concerning heat treatment in a project on the deformation of planetary gears of a large diameter has been discussed.
Visit of Silesian University of Technology professors
January 4th, 2013 - Jerzy Barglik and Kazimierz Ducki, Faculty of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy of Silesian University of Technology professors as the first in new year visited Department of Materials Science and Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials. Through the visit the details for preparation of a project proposal for the controlled induction heating elements with complex shapes have been discussed. Change of the frequency, new two-stage supply construction development of numerical control algorithm for induction heating process are some of the discussed and agreed issues of the meeting.

On 14th of November 2012 the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials hosted presentation of the latest model of metallographic microscope - OLYMPUS DSX500i. The presentation was led by Mr. Luke Jędrzejczyk representative of OLYPUS Poland Sp. of o.o. The presentation was attended by employees of the Department of Materials Science and Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials, third-year students of Materials Science Engineering and employees of Approval and Special Processes Expertise Laboratoey of WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" S.A.
Training for employees of Customs Office from Przemysl
On 12th of November 2012 Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials held a one-day training for employees of Customs Office from Przemysl. The themes of the training were: ferrous and non-ferrous metals, metallography and microstructure investigation by light microscopy and spectrometric methods. The training included lectures (4h) and practical exercises (4h) in the Metallographic Laboratory and Chemical Composition Laboratory. Classes were conducted by: Maryana Yavorska-Zagula, Arkadiusz Onyszko and Waldemar Ziaja.
"Advanced Coating Technologies for Aviation Applications" symposium
On 21-24 October 2012 a symposium titled: "Advanced Coating Technologies for Aviation Applications" took place at Hotel Prezydencki in Rzeszow. It was hosted by Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials in partnership with ALD Vaccum Technologies Company. Rzeszow hosted word elite of professors and engineers in the field of thin films and coatings manufacturing. The symposium program included presentation of modern and unique state-of-art equipment for layers manufacturing by EB-PVD method - Smart Coater - by ALD Vacuum Technologies. This device complements the company - manufacturer of industrial machinery and equipment intended for Original Elements Manufacturers. During this meeting the full research capabilities of the Laboratory have been presented.

On 3rd of October 2012, the inaugural lecture on the study direction Materials Engineering titled "Who I will become" gave General Director of WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" S.A. Marek Darecki. Presidents of the Capital Cities Councils Convention in Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials
On 3-5 October 2012 Presidents of the Capital Cities Councils Convesnsion was organized in Rzeszów. In addition to such debates f.e. about free city areas planning councilors had planned presentation of the Aviation Valley, visit the Departments of WSK "PZL-Rzeszow" SA and a visit to the Laboratory. During the visit (lasting about 2 hours), councilors had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the main areas of Laboratory work and with available laboratory equipment.

Delivery of furnace for thermo-chemical treatment in vacuum
Auction procedure for purchasing of furnace for thermo-chemical treatment in vacuum had been opened on 18th of January 2011. MonoTherm furnace by ALD Vacuum Technologies Company has been delivered to the Laboratory at the beginning of November and the assembly and installation had began. The official acceptance protocol was signed on 23rd of November 2011. The furnace can carry out thermo-chemical treatment (carburizing and nitriding) in vacuum and quenching in gas ( nitrogen).

On 30th of August 2011 Triumpf Laser Cell 3008 with two laser sources TruPulse 203 and TruDisk 1000 have been delivered to the Research and Development Laboratory for Aerospace Materials. Annouced on 31st of August 2012 auction for purchasing of equipment for manufacturing of diffusion layers by glowing method has been finalised on 21st of June 2011 by delivery of IONIT Metaplast Heat Treatment System by Sulzer Metco company. The system is based on PA CVD (Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition) method.

The auction has ben won by Sulzer Ltd.company from Switzerland. On 23rd of December 2010 the device: LPPS Thin Film has been delivered.
